Re: [RC] new topic re green horses - Ed and Wendy Hauser
In the midwest (UMECRA) country all endurance rides also have a CTR
associated with them. There are a few only CTR rides sanctioned. Very many
riders bring two horses each weekend and do both an endurance and a CTR.
Many use CTR as their only sport. Many riders (my preference) start horses
on CTR.
Starting on CTR teaches a number of good things to a horse. and rider.
1. You can go slow and pace yourself
2. You can relax and get your p/R down in a crowd.
3. The race is not always to the fastest.
LD's have only been in the UMECRA area for a few years. Some start on them,
but many of the participants are using experienced horses and going faster.
The mix of 3 different sports on one weekend seems to work well. It sure
allows smaller rides to have a positive cash flow.
I personally think that a year or two of CTR is a minimum training for a new
endurance rider.
