Re: [RC] new topic re green horses - MtnRondi
All the horses we have ever done endurance with have had their start in
NATRC. My son completed Tevis 4 times out of 4 starts on horses who learned
to just pick up a steady pace and keep on going the direction they were
pointed. No nonsense. I completed Tevis once on my first attempt on our NATRC
horse... the same horse who was BC on the first Capitol to Capitol ride (200
miles). All horses benefited from LSD work. I agree, Novice is pretty boring
and too slow, but it is for young horses and people who are just a little
afraid to go Open. Open (30 to 35 miles each day for 2 days) is supposed to
be timed at a trot in all the places you can trot and walk down steep hills.
Sometimes it is timed so fast you must trot downhill, but we try to save the
legs and not do that. On the average, CTR is not the wimpy sport a lot of
people think it is, haha. You actually will learn how to ride properly and
save your horse in the process. Then the progression to endurance is an easy
step.
