Not too many horses do a 5+ mph walk,
granted. But it's something we strive for in our program and achieve with
several. And granted, NATRC has speeded up their open division some in
recent years. When the Jackson Hole ride was run, the rules said 4 to 4.5
mph. And the terrain there was so vertical that while we did not find it
challenging at that speed, it was not inappropriate. I agree that if one
uses NATRC to start endurance prospects, one should use the open division.
My point was not to bash NATRC, but to point out that a) the novice
division is too slow for endurance prospects, and that b) one need not do CTR to
have the same effect, but rather one CAN do whatever one chooses with endurance
in terms of the company and environment in which one starts one's horse--ie one
can do exactly the same thing as one would do at a CTR while one is at an AERC
ride, if one so chooses....

horses
Since the advent of the GPS I think lots of people are
learning what a 5 mph walk really is. An Open ride would not be timed at
4 mph.
