Removing Pine Sap

My horse got a huge glob of Pine tree sap on his
front right leg. When I brought him in it had
already hardened. I tried washing it off, that
didn't work, then I tried picking it off, but
that jsut pulls off the hair and skin and
hurts..Is there anything that gets this stuff out
without breaking the skin? Thanks. -Kelly
