Re: Endurance Riding For Complete Idiots
Kris--
Everybody, absolutely EVERYBODY who rides endurance,
had a first endurance ride and was green as grass. You pay your entry, you
show up, and you have as much right to be there as the most experienced winner
of 100s who, BTW, would probably be happy to answer questions when she has
the time.
Many people prefer to tie to the trailer rather than
use pens, as you've been reading about lately on RC. You say your horse is
experienced at being trailer tied so don't worry about it. Be sure he's
tied so that he can lie down but cannot get a foot over the rope; i.e. so that
the tie rope snap just touches the ground when unhooked from the horse.
After he's tied for awhile go back and check the length again. Take an
extra lead rope so that once you have the trailer tie rope right you don't have
to mess with it.
When you vet in Friday afternoon tell the vet it's your
first ride and you want to learn. Take time to walk around camp and
observe how others are taking care of their horses and ask questions. Most
endurance riders love to share their experiences with others.
Hopefully the ride briefing meeting on Friday evening will answer all your
questions about what to expect the next day on the trail. But if it
doesn't, speak up, ask about what you didn't understand. That meeting is
for the purpose of information for all riders.
I have no idea what's in your cough remedy but would
hesitate to use it within 96 hours of competition since there is very likely an
ingredient which would fall within the AERC drug rules.
Good luck and remember to RELAX about this and have
fun. That's the only reason to do it, if it's FUN.
