Re: A tragic story-(sorry it's so long)
As sorry as I am to hear about these lovely horses being killed, I have to
agree with Tom---horses/animals are very hard to see at night unless they
are right in the middle of the road and even then when your headlights pick
them up, you are waaaay too close. I hit a horse some years ago--on a dark
night on a country road---this horse was an "escapee" and had been
wandering/grazing along the side of the road, and stepped out from behind a
tree shadow into the path of our car just as we reached that point---we hit
his head and a good rate of speed. However----this story had a better
ending--we immediately turned around at the first place possible and went
back---no horse to be found within a 1/4 mile of the area. We stopped,
woke up the owners and told them. The horse was eventually found about 1/2
mile away--with nothing but a broken jaw.
Perhaps people who ride at night should do a "test run" and have some
friends ride along the road as you drive down it, just to check out
visibility, etc.
