Dear Paddi;
You have excellent points! There
was a bit of joking that some people do a "trainer's
float"...float the teeth just far enough back that the trainer can
reach. No, equine dentists are very different than vets, dentistry is
all they do. I do not believe they were vets, there was a
veterianarian in attendance to do the tranquilizing.
After seeing what a difference it has made in
my one horse, I would like to take the rest of mine to have them
checked. They gave me a pamphlet which is available if someone wants
to contact the World Wide Association of Equine Dentistry(403)933-2036 and
it explains many things that can go wrong and what the symptoms
are.

Good story with a
happy ending.
Every year all my 4 of my horses get their teeth done. It
isn't very
expensive since I have them done every fall by a vet who
specializes in
dentistry. Maintenance is cheaper then work. I have him
tranquilize all
of them.
The reason I try to do teeth in the fall is
it is a less busy time for
the vet I use.
Costs less then a set of
shoes per horse and gives peace of mind.
Best to have someone do the
teeth who specializes in dentistry. Not all
vets have the experience to
do a good
job.
