RE: Another LD vet check question
It's helpful to the vet if they see the horses right away -- if there is a
possible problem they detect early, they can keep an eye on the horse during
the hold time and recheck before sending them out. At least that's the
explanation I've heard several times from the vet, and it makes sense to me.
It also seems to be more prevalent on LD rides I've been on than 50's and
up. I guess the expectation is if you're riding 50's, you have more
experience to recognize issues yourself (no flames here please, I'm not
making a judgement about that!).

Subject: RC: Another LD vet check question
Annette Jacobs wildpony@san.rr.com
Hello-
Last year I was in a 25 mile LD & when I got to the vet check I
knew my horse was already down. (I had gotten off & walked him
in). I was planning on spending lots of time at the mid-check,
letting my 1st ride - 4 year old stay relaxed.
The VERY NICE helpers took his PR & urged me to go to the Vet
ASAP. I tried to explain that I was not in a hurry, but they
really seemed to think I should get to it.
Question: If you are planning on a 5 hour 25 mile ride, is there
any reason to rush into the midway vetting? I still have not
figured out what was so urgent. Am I missing something? Maybe
the helpers were more eager then I. They really wanted to help
any way they could.
Thanks
Annette
