Re: RC: Spanish bloodlines for endurance
Brenda,
A mare I owned until just recently selling her to a friend, is 1/4 Spanish
--- her paternal grandsire was *An Malik, plus her paternal tail female dam
line went back to the Draper Spanish imports. Kadance+/ top tenned the IAHA
national CTR all 3 times I took her (the 1st time I went I was strictly a CTR
rider, having done no endurance), and has about 7 or 8 50 mile top 10's now.
She has over 3000 miles & is still going strong. Her other lines are
Crabbet & Polish.
Her son, now 6 and 1/8 Spanish, has a National CTR top 10 & 7 50 mile top
10's. He has 1000 miles
Both horses have been very sound, have excellent bone (something the Spanish
horses are noted for), as well as sweet personalities. Kadance, especially,
has a very no nonsense, "professional" attitude (as one vet noted) ---
supposedly the Spanish horses have a more laid back attitude.
Juan de Shawn, an Arab racehorse in NJ, is half Spanish.
Kadance & Tempo also have excellent recoveries, but I suspect that part of
that is the conditioning as I've noticed that when they are coming back from
a vacation, their recoveries are slower.
The Spanish Arabs were a very closed breeding group for several decades when
Franco was in power, so they can be quite inbred, which is a consideration if
you are breeding them. However, for endurance, some Spanish blood has been
very, very good for me.
Shamelessly touting my horses in the name of SPanish bloodlines,
Nancy
