Your description of the problem is not unlike those of a common problem
known as Morton's neuroma arising from an irritated, swollen nerve in the
ball of the foot (simple refs: http://www.affc.com/neuroma.html,

http://www.footcare4u.com/ailments/neuroma.html).
It may be worthwhile to consult a physician/podiatrist to eliminate the
possibility of a specific problem that may simply get worse if untreated.
Caveat: This note does not represent specific medical advice, just a
nudge from one who is frequently reluctant to ask for help, especially if
it involves doctors (even if it might make riding less painful). ;-(
