pellets, EPM

Hi all, thanks again for all your contributions. Here are some new questions:
1. Which is better: to feed pellets in a chest high bucket in order to
lesson exposure to possums (EPM carrier) or feed on ground.
2. Arabs have less space between their jaw and wing of the atlas, usually
its hard to even get one finger in the crack behind the curve of the jaw -
the throatlatch, whereas 3 fingers is easy on a thoroughbred. The salivary
gland lies in that space and gets squished over the years, especially when
the horse is asked to bend at the poll. Does this compression lead to less
saliva production which could lead to choke?
My horse is a very slow eater, I suspect low saliva production might be
part of the problem. I'm definitely going to experiment with wetting his
food. (The horse he lives next to now has learned to dunk his hay, esp.
alfalfa in his waterer - quite amusing to watch, he gets the dreamiest look
on his face standing over his bowl brimming over with dripping alfalfa
strands munching away. He finishes one bunch, goes to the dry hay, grabs
another chunk and puts it in the bowl.)
I'm going to strongly encourage the barn manage of the barn Dudley will
move to to make the pellet storage area possum proof!!!
Cheers, Laney
