My 32 year old choked a week ago Monday. The vet told me to keep his
head *down* to allow him to cough. That was the only way he was able to
expel large quantities of mucus (and carrot fragments) through his nose!
>>If your horse does choke and then seem to
recover, you should still have the vet check him out to be sure there is
no remaining obstruction.<<
Good advice. My vet couldn't clear the obstruction, just moved it down
the neck, and kinked her tube twice making us fear esophogeal abrasions.
It took 35 minutes of endoscopy to clear it, after a 25 minute trailer
ride to the local equine hospital. I was happy to have my slant load
with no manger, so he could keep his head down.
One comment--my guy was on soaked pellets with Eq Sr slurry for a week
afterwards. MAN, did the uneaten portions of that draw flies! Maybe it
was the bit of molasses in the Sr.
