I had leased a TB mare and I was keeping for the winter in a pasture with two other horses. I was laid up in the hospital with a surgery at the time, but lucklily my husband Scott was checking in. He went up to see her and took a big bucket of pellets since we were supplementing her hay with alfalfa pellets. She was so hungry, she dove into them and after about 15 minutes started choking. The mare was unable to dislodge the pellets and my husband being the logical man he is and 6'2'' he picked up her head and poured mineral oil down her throat. By the time the vet arrived the impaction had passed, although with further examination the vet informed us that it had damaged her throat lining which later resulted in scar tissue. From then on it was recommended that her food be watered, hay or grain and he recommended against pellets, explaining that they expand to pellets. I hear about her now and again, she had another throat impaction later on which damaged her throat f!
urther and now lives in large pasture which has lots of moisture.
I learned later that the other horses in her pasture were chasing her off her food. That explained why she was so hungry. Of course I moved her immediately but that can't undo the damage.
