I don't vaccinate for rabies because Washington state has only a single
case of rabies in horses in 40 years. The is no skunk or racoon rabies. If
the situation were different, I would vaccinate. I don't know what the
incidence of wild animal rabies (or horse rabies) is in Michigan, so this
post may be off base. But be aware that rabies in horse is very difficult
to diagnose. It can in fact be difficult to diagnose in humans. One case
went undiagnosed to the point where when it was finally diagnosed, there
were 50 people (mostly medical personel) that had to get the post exposure
rabies series. There is a degree of responsibility to other people that may
transcend your personal risk assessment.
