Re: [RC] Time off before 100's - Dabney Finch

PLEASE listen to The Source on this folks and disregard my earlier email.

As a matter of fact, I'm going to follow his advice for 20 Mule Team 100. (Like I could ever be in Joe Long's class even if I followed his advice--in my dreams!)

Joe--I just gots to know--you didn't really manage to complete a 100 one week after doing a 50??

I was browsing through the Decade Team stories, and saw that several
decade team riders give their horses time off, maybe 2 or 3 weeks,
prior to a 100 mile ride, and then 2-4 weeks off after as well. Can
anyone with years of experience with 100's, tell me if this usually
complete time off, with only pasture turn-out, or, are the horses
usually still ridden lightly. We (daughter & I) are planning our
first 100 in July (Tevis), and don't want to overtrain and go with
worn out horses, but we do want them to be fit enough to handle it.

Well, I always like to ride a 50 one week prior to a 100 as a "tuneup" ride, but
every time I say something like this someone points out that I had an atypical
horse, so take that into consideration.

I do think 2-3 weeks off would take the edge off and be counterproductive for
most horses. You want to continue enough exercise to keep at peak fitness.
