I use a rawhide bosal, thick 3/4" with 1/2" cotton reins tied correctly underneath to give a good stop to train in for short rides.  Eventually my horses stop immediately when I give body & seat cues and a little rein hint for stop. I believe not having a bit in their mouthes to train in at first makes them softer mouthed and more responsive later, because they learn your body cues first without being abused by a bit when testing you.   I wouldn't use the bosal for long rides, though, as I found it chaffed one of my horses midway through on a 100 mile three day.  Made me feel like a big bad meany.  Some people I know use it over a milder snaffle bit, just in case the horse doesn't listen to the snaffle to stop or slow, they can use the bosal.

Always use the bosal with a throatlatch on the trail if you decide to try it, it's easy to rub off or get hooked on a branch and come off without the throatlatch.
