Let him know this is NOT acceptable behavior. He'll get bored with the bit soon enough, and go back to placing his mouth elsewhere...probably on you. To take this one step further, in a herd setting, he would be swooped upon and pursued by a more dominant horse if he pulled this stuff. People make the mistake of trying to whack mouthy younguns in the head--that just makes them head-shy and makes a game of it. If they nip, ATTACK them! Get BIG, use your hand like teeth, and swoop at them in the ribs--and "bite" them just as if you were the alpha horse. Let them know, "Not in MY herd!" Ed is also right, though--with colts, gelding is a big help.
