[RC] [Guest] Adding Calcium to diet ? - Ridecamp Moderator

Bonnie bonnie_saba@xxxxxxxxx
Hi group,
My Endurance mare is stabled with a group of other endurance horses. They are all on the same feed program. It is the habit to feed 1 0z daily of pure calcium (imported from Iran) and it is felt that the 1/2 kg of rice bran fed daily would meet the phosphorous needs to balance the calcium intake.
Recently a knowledgeable trainer advised me against feeding pure calcium under any circumstances except to days leading up to/or on race day. Her thoughts are that if one adds calcium to a horses diet on a regular basis the parathyroid gland (which normally extracts and provides calcium to the body as it needs it)would no longer be needed and would eventually lose its ability to extract and provide calcium to the body when needed. Hense the body would become dependent on added dietary calcium only. I know this can happen to humans with some additives (ie. melatonin) but I am not sure if it is the same with calcium.
Can anyone enlighten me on this??
Also, could someone recommend a good equine nutrient site?
Thank you....
