Re: [RC] ride time analysis - Teri HunterKat, I myself feel that the way you presented your opinion was extremely uncalled for. It sounded as if you were running for election and running a smear campaign. If you felt that AERC does not give enough information to run sats, then that is what you could have said instead of verbally attacking someone for their work. Your opinion does count but don't you think people would take your opinion a lot more serious if you presented it in a professional manner without the verbal abuse. And while the inaccurate data may be the only thing that he had available, what he did was try to give the appearance of valid statistical analysis to something that simply wasn't. He made statements about an analysis of average speeds, when the data that he had didn't even allow him to calculate average speeds. And that is just plain old BAD statistics. Analyzing and drawing conclusions from statistical analyses can lead to all kinds of misconceptions even when you do the analysis with good data, since averages may not be meaningful (and statisticians recognize this, which is why they have at least three different ways to calculate "average"); and making generaliztions (which is what statistics is all about) can get you into trouble. However, making generalizations about data you don't even have doesn't just open you up to getting into trouble, it is pointless. Unless your purpose is to point out how bad the data is. But he didn't do that.... ....so I did. I didn't want all the trouble he went to to go for naught--since the only proper conclusion that can be drawn from his analysis is that the AERC doesn't provide enough data to perform valid statistical analyses. kat Orange County, Calif. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= http://www.endurance.net/ads/seabiscuit.html Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
