Re: [RC] amendment - CharlesYou are correct, we cannot vote in their national elections, and they cannot vote in ours. I've never had a problem with that and I doubt anyone here does either. I think we have to distinguish between voting in National Elections (something that can only be done by citizens) and voting as members of an association. Nationality doesn't and shouldn't play a role in association membership. As a member of an association, I would expect every member to receive the same vote. If I join the Distance Riding Organization of El Salvador (assuming such a thing exists), I would expect to have a vote, just like any other member in good standing of that organization. If I joined the AERC (which I am planning on joining) I would expect a vote just like any other member. Immigration Status doesn't affect my judgment of what is good for the association or how I am likely to vote. If you think about it, associations, by definition are people with a common interest coming together for a common purpose. When you look at other AERC members, do you think about their immigration status, or do you see another endurance rider? Do we get to vote on anything in their country? Illegal residents are now asking for free health benefits and some are getting it. Who pays? The tax paying citizens of this country of course. The Canadians asked for reduced Membership Fees. Now this. The Articles of Incorporation of the AERC states within the United States of America. If they want to vote then become a citizen that's the solution. I vote no.
