RE: [RC] Bad worm that I got and so did my daughter Jocelyn on a brand new Dell she just got today! - Don and Pam BowenJackie, It's ok, even though I asked for private emails. The reason is that even though I'm a little more than computer literate, it's not like I'm an IT person and I can't explain why the "code" works, it was just easier for me to pass the information to others on a personal level as "hearsay" from Earthlink :). It's the 2nd most positive thing that's happened since I was laid off my job of 13 years, I had time to sit on hold, for hours!!! The 1st positive is I've had the pleasure of spending lots of time with the herd! The answer to Heidi's question is in your reply. The worm has infected the web, when the web is surfed the worm looks for vulnerable computers and attacks. Your mistake with copying everybody may have helped, from what I've been hearing, time is of the essence, hate to lose any of those RC posts!!!! Glad your computers are well again! And to all you RC posters, if you have Windows 2000, NT or XP, get to the Microsoft website and download the patch, pronto, because it really sucks when it gets your computer and, for selfish reasons, I really enjoy all the RC posts! My daughter said her new Dell laptop came today via Fed-Express and she hooked it up to the internet and surfed an art site. And sorry I copied all this to ridecamp from Pam. I forgot the ridecamp address was in my email box and I sent it to all!! ----- Original Message ----- From: "heidi sowards" <ribbitttreefrog@xxxxxxxxx> To: "Typef" <typef@xxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Wednesday, August 13, 2003 5:21 PM Subject: Re: [RC] Bad worm that I got and so did my daughter Jocelyn on a brand new Dell she just got today! Can I ask how the computors get this worm in the first place? Seeing how a brand new comp. had it, can't imagine it was through an e-mail. thanks heidi --- Typef <typef@xxxxxxxxxxx> wrote:Hey everyone ... I'm sending this out to everyone because time is of the essense on this. If you have Windows 2000, XP or NT4 (and there may be a couple of others) you need to go get this patch before you can't. It fixed Jocelyn's computer. If the link to the page at the bottom splits into two lines, make sure you type the 03-026.asp after you copy and paste the first line as it won't pick it up if you copy and paste both lines into your web browser. :) Jackie Web Administrator for: www.JohnnyCash.com www.AutographCollector.com www.SergioLeone.net www.PlanetShandar.com Shandar SkinCare: www.wetrack4u.com/p/goshandar/link.cgi?100ND Here you go, I'm just doing a copy/paste of what I sent others. Remember, when it's time to type you have to complete the sequence before the 60 seconds are up. Lots of folks are getting hit, but I haven't had much feedback yet as to whether or not this is working for everyone else, if it is working then folks are probably busy catching up, or, perhaps they are suspicious and are waiting. Either way, you have to get the patch. Worse case, call around to friends that live near you, if they haven't been affected yet ask them to download the patch for the system you use to a floppy. When you get the floppy (already have a friend that tried this) don't try to install from the floppy. Put the file on your desktop first then install from there. Good luck, if you're not clear on something let me know, Pam They're calling it a worm now, it's all over the news, plus they say that by this Sat. it'll prevent you from getting to the MS website to get the patch. McAfee finally sent me something on it, I hear Norton (Symantec) is not commenting until tomorrow. Your job is to logon and start immediately trying to get to the MS website and find your download. This download takes awhile so if your computer is in the shape mine was in you'll get the countdown to shutdown before you even get to the site. Warning, we had to try a couple of times. Had to reboot once, another time Internet Explorer said page was unavailable, I believe hitting refresh did the trick. He (Earthlink) actually took me to www.microsoft.com, at the very top we clicked on All Products (which gives a dropdown box), and selected downloads. Yesterday, my selection was #4 on that page. I have Windows XP, don't know what you have, and be careful, given all the hype they may have moved things around. As long as you get the countdown stopped and get into the main site you'll find your patch. (I just checked, mine is still #4, but they are calling it the blaster worm now, #3 is for Windows 2000, if you have NT you may have to look around more within the site.) So, when the countdown to shutdown starts, go to start (lower left in desktop), then select run. Clear whatever is in the box and type shutdown /a then hit enter. Let me make sure we're clear, you'll type shutdown (all one word), then space (yes there is a space after shutdown) then forward slash, then a, then hit enter. Again shutdown-space-forward slash-a-hit enter. That stops the clock and makes that box go away. The guy had me download the patch to my desktop. Then I exited everything and double-clicked the icon to start the installation, the installation took quite some time, takes its sweet time doing some file scan thing. But, life is good now!! Good luck, let me know how it goes, Pam -----Original Message----- From: Typef [mailto:typef@xxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Wednesday, August 13, 2003 3:54 PM To: Don and Pam Bowen Subject: Re: [RC] help with computer Would you believe my daughter's new laptop came today and she hooked it up, went online and now she's having this problem? What's the "code" for bypassing the 60-second shutdown? I would really appreciate it!!! It's not a virus (McAfeedidn't help me) andit's going like crazy right now. I got hit with thesame thing and spenthours on hold with Earthlink yesterday to get it fixed.Once it gets to thepoint of what happened to me and the original posterit's not so easy tofix, a patch needs to be downloaded from MS, impossiblewhen your computershuts down a few minutes after being online. Theproblem is a weakness inthe security system of Windows 2000, NT and XP and somepesky hackers messedthings up. According to Earthlink, it's probably goingto hit everyone, doesn't matter who your ISP is. Earthlink is extremelybusy right now!!I've attached a link to a MS website that describes theproblem, there areother links from there for more information as well asthe patches. It canalso be accessed from the main Microsoft page. If anyone is running any of the above systems it'sprobably a good idea todownload/install the patch before you start havingproblems. If you'realready having problems I can pass on the instructionsEarthlink gave to meto stop the 60 second countdown to shutdown so you canstay online longenough to download the patch, email me privately. http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/?url=/technet/security/bulletin/MS 03-026.asp ===== Heidi-aerc#M20935 /\_/\~ http://www.synjinarts.com ~~/~~ \\~~~~ (Wildlife/Western & Equine / O> ) \~~~~~ Art) / __/ \~~~~~~ (_@_/ | \~~~~ | \~~~~~~ | \~~~~ __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
