Re: [RC] stifle locking problem - Helen & Larry McMasterMy now 15 yr old arab mare, Ember, had stifle locking problems between the ages of 1 yr and 5yrs. My vet gave me this advise - no lunging, no being confined to a stall, and (this is his exact phrase) take her out and ride the piss out her! The conditioning definitely worked as the stifles have never locked since. Helen McMaster, Ont. A friend's geldingwas just sent to a trainer and the trainer said the horse's stifle locks up. My friend is at a loss at what this means or what to do. A vet suggested iodine shots. (??) Is this something that will cause problems down the road? Can a horse get over it with better condiditoning?>>Lots of slow conditioning will also tighten up the ligaments involved, and are (obviously) a better option to try before injecting the joint, or surgery.
