Re: [RC] When to electrolyte - Maggie Mieske

Susan,
Is there a particular place that you "douse" your horse that absorbs the
electrolytes better than another place???? LOL :) Sorry....I couldn't
help myself!!!

As Heidi pointed out, you MUST know your horse.
However, when you're just starting, it's more of a
"trial & error" system.

Here's what has worked for me...

No matter how long the trip is, I don't electrolite
during the trip and I DO offer water at every stop
along with some green grass that I've pulled at home
and placed in a plastic baggie in with water in it. I
also offer carrots. Once I get to camp, I feed
electrolites in the grain then douse my horse with
electrolites before going to bed. I give
elecytrolites before the ride, at a water stop about
1/2 way along the trail, when walking into the vet
check, back at the trailer before heading back out,
repeat...then after the ride.

I encourage water consumption during the ride and
allow my horse to eat grass along the trail as well.

I also add about 2 Tbs of Lite salt: 2 oz of
electrolites. This adds a little more K since there
doesn't seem to be enough in what I use and I don't
really like making my own.

Hope this helps!
