Re: [RC] To breed or not to breed - Heidi SmithBelieve it or not some of us do make money breeding mares and selling the foals ...BUT you have to know what sells, where the demand is, what bloodlines are in vogue (with just the mention of which puts dollar signs in peoples eyes) and what nicks well with these popular bloodlines. Just my observation over 30+ years as a breeder, but breeding for what is in vogue is just about the worst reason to breed (please, no offense intended here) because the fads change so rapidly. The kill pens and rescues are full of what was in vogue 3 years ago, particularly among Arabs. If you want to breed because YOU want a horse (which sounds like the case here), then you need to research what kinds and bloodlines of horses do what YOU want to do. Never mind the glossy ads--get out in the trenches and find out what families CONSISTENTLY do the kind of job you want to do. Get a mare from that line, and then don't worry about the perfect stallion (he has yet to be born, never mind that no one stallion is right for every mare, no matter how good they are)--go out and find a stallion of similar breeding that complements the mare. If you want to put together a long-term program, again, define what it is that YOU want to breed, find the lines that consistently do that, and then STICK TO THEM. When you start following what is in vogue, after a few generations you end up with a genetic stew that is completely inconsistent at producing much of anything.
