Re: [RC] re: Parkes proposal # 4 - Howard BramhallThe problem with confidentiality is it will eliminate one of the best sources of information about how the horse was ridden during the ride. The rider's statement should be a part of the package; if we must we could omit the rider's name when published in Endurance News. By not having a rider's statement the full story of what happened at the ride will not be told. Do we really need to protect the rider, with confidentiality, when it's the horse we are trying to protect? Do you think that the rider's name won't get out there, via the underground rumor windmill, anyway? It will; it has, and it will continue to be. The best protection for the rider is his/her explanation of what happened. Otherwise, someone else will write that part of the story for them. Which version of the truth would you rather read? None of these statements should be voluntary. They should be required, by all involved, within a reasonable time (2 weeks to 30 days). If the statements are not provided there should be an automatic suspension from participating in AERC rides to those who refuse to provide them. This is a serious issue and needs to be dealt with in such a manner. To dance around it with lawyers leading the band does a disservice to the horse and our organization. Direct, open, and up front is the best course of action here. Get it all out in the open so we can proudly say to the world, "We have nothing to hide." cya, Howard ----- Original Message ----- From: "Teresa Van Hove" <vanhove@xxxxxxxx> To: <ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Monday, March 03, 2003 10:46 PM Subject: [RC] re: Parkes proposal # 4 Well I like the confidentiality. I think the thought of anyone being able to get all the reports and possibly attack you for a horse death from a horse got into the feed room and colic'd, or horse ran thru a fence, ... or something else totatlly unrelated to having ridden an endurance ride a few weeks ago could lead to fear and and doubt and unwillingness to comply. Lack of confidentiality could also make witnesses reluctant to provide statements in some situations where there perhaps was mismanagement of the horse by the rider or owner related to the endurance ride. The vet committees report gets published in EN under Parkes proposal.D. The official Veterinary Committee report on any horse fatality received by the Board be made available to members on request (with any appropriate copying charge) and be published in Endurance News. If those reports are inadequate then all of AERC will know it and can demand better. If a member feels the vet committee report was unfair to them, they can submit their side of the story and request any other witnesses to also voluntarily publish their statements. All AERC memebers on this list should carefully read the full propasal themselves and comment to their BOD members. I know I hope the proposal passes and I emailed my support of it to BOD. TeresaJim Holland wrote >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>C. All witness statements collected by the AERC for purposes of reporting on horse fatalities, including statements from the head veterinarian, treating veterinarian, ride manager and rider and/or owner, be immediately transmitted to the AERC Veterinary Committee for its review, but otherwise be held in confidence; and THIS part, IMHO, is totally unacceptable... THIS MEANS ONLY THE VET COMMITTEE WILL KNOW WHAT REALLY HAPPENED! THE ENTIRE MEMBERSHIP SHOULD BE AWARE OF ALL THE FACTS. IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, DON'T RIDE!! IMHO, THIS FIXES NOTHING AND SIMPLY LEADS TO FEAR, UNCERTAINTY AND DOUBT.=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
