Re: [RC] Selenium levels - Heidi Smith

Having tested several horses & discovered low to marginal levels, Does
anyone know how much a dose of injected Se would raise the blood level?

It varies from horse to horse, but in my experience, I've never had the
injectable dose raise levels beyond the normal range. If horses are less
deficient, the recommended dose will tend to keep the horse normal for
longer, whereas in the extremely deficient horse, the levels may not quite
reach normal and will fall again much more rapidly. Figure that in mild
deficiencies, the injectable dose will suffice for anywhere from 4-6 weeks,
whereas in the face of extreme deficiency, the injection will only suffice
for 2-3 weeks, unless one starts an oral supplement at the same time.
Note--this isn't gospel from the drug company--this is just my own
experience testing several client horses over the years.

Heidi
