And......don't make the mistake I did with a mare we bought some years ago that was overweight and soft.....don't up the exercise, AND try to diet the horse at the same time.  I ended up with a thin mare going into winter that we struggled for YEARS to get and keep weight BACK ON.  Learned that lesson!  The mare ended up, despite her rounded body when we got her, being a leaner framed horse that was a picky eater/hard keeper.

Just start the "more aggressive conditioning."  Dieting weight off does nothing to contribute to his fitness.  Maintain his feed where it is, and just build on the start you have made with the conditioning.  You've started on a reasonable schedule--if he is handling that with no trouble, start adding more work.
