I know there are "bullet proof vests" - the shock and
impact protection worn by bull riders - but these are too bulky and too hot for
endurance use. Instead, you might consider using a Camelback (or equiv)
water sack. Just like those yellow water barrels they place on the
freeway to cushion the impact of a car hitting a bridge or guard rail, a water
sack will absorb a large amount of impact in a fail, and it will cover most of
your spine. Be sure to get a type that has a waist strap, so that it stays
in position, and one that has a baffle (separator) inside the water bladder to
reduce the sloshing. Obviously, if you also use it for your water supply
and drink out of it, just remember not to drink it too far down or you'll lose
your protection.
These water sacks come in a range of types, sizes, styles,
and weights; a great place to research them is at rei.com.

Does
anyone know if there are back braces/supports that help reduce back injuries
in falls but still are flexible? Deb
