Ridecamp: [RC] Concussions: be carefull! They can have lasting consequences

  I suffered a bad concussion (not horse-related) many years ago, and more recently a less sever concussion from falling off a horse, so I have an interest in the topic.  At the time of the first one, the neurologist told me that once you have suffered a concussion you are more suceptible to have another.  More recently I heard a story on the radio that research showed that peple who have suffered even a single, mild concussion are more likely to have alzheimers later in life.  More recently still I participated in a research study looking at the effect of head-injury and the corpus callosum (nerve bundle connecting the two halves of the brain).  Don't know the results, but the study was inspired by evidence that even mild head injury causes permanent damge to the corpus callosum which effects some types of congnitive and spatial functioning- such as the ability of the left hand to know what the right hand is doing ;-)

So wear those helmets!
