Re: [RC] Concussions/was runaways - RDCARRIE

I'm enjoying these stories! The only really bad fall I've had since starting
endurance was this past April during a 50 when my horse stepped in a hole and
fell with me and I landed on my head - shattered my helmet and broke my eye
socket, but no concussion. Did get a mild concussion when I was a freshman
in high school, though, and didn't know such things as riding helmets
existed. My best friend and I used to borrow a neighbor's Shetland pony mare
and a small QH gelding and go riding on weekends. We'd go tearing through
the pear orchards in southern Oregon bareback at a full gallop, grabbing
green pears off trees and throwing them at each other. One day I was on the
pony, my friend was right in front of me on the QH, and we were engaging in
our usual pear warfare. She threw a pear backwards at me and beaned me right
in the forehead with it. Ever been hit in the head at full gallop with a
hard green pear? I went backwards off that pony like I'd been shot. I don't
remember anything till I came to as my friend was dumping water from the
irrigation ditch in my face. I didn't remember much about the ride home till
we got to her driveway. She said I kept asking her what happened over and
over. I was finally lucid enough to make her promise not to tell our parents
what happened. We told them I hit a tree branch. <G> I'm still amazed that
    I survived adolescence. LOL
