    EARLY JANUARY NEWS

Happy New Year! Here is all the latest info for the Mountain Zone:

THE DUCK FLIES WITH THE MTN ZONE:I am please to announce that Dave Nicholson has agreed to be the head vet for our team in Washington. He was the vet for the Mtn. Zone in '01 and '93, so he's been around this block before.

LAST MINUTE 100-There will be a one day 100 on March 1st on the LBJ grasslands in Decatur, TX if you still need to get some minimum mileage in. Riders must register by Feb. 5th. Please contact Sue Phillips at (972) 563-3765.

***SELECTION TRIALS TO BE USED FOR QUALIFYING***-We have been sent the draft of all of the nomination information which when finalized will be sent out to you sometime after January 19th. This year riders will now have to ride one of four FEI sanctioned 100's that have been designated as selection trials for the Mountain Zone. The rides are:

  • 4/26/03 Indian Springs/ CEI*** Socorro; Socorro, NM
  • 5/2/03 Washoe Valley Ride/ CEI***Carson City; Carson City, NV
  • 6/8/03 Ft. Howes/ CEI*** Ashland; Ashland, MT (Note this is on a Sunday)
  • 6/21/03 Sunriver/CEI*** Bend; Bend, OR

If you are going to nominate on two horses you will have to complete two of these rides, one on each horse. I'm sure this new format will generate some questions so please do not hesitate to email. The chair of the selection committee is Linda Howard of Draper, UT. Linda is an experienced endurance rider who has been a selector in the past. She will be assisted by Harriet Aiken (ID), Kathy Leaver (UT), Carrie Miracle (AZ) and Cheryl Winter (CO). One or two of them will be at each selection trial, so be sure to introduce yourself them.

RAFFLE NEWS: Susie Schomburg has put together a fantastic raffle package of three Grand Prizes. First is a three year old purebred Arabian gelding, Sweepstakes nominated, by Bask Flame. Second is an original painting by Susan Norris-Romero, the artist who has painted the last two horses voted into the AERC Hall of Fame. And third is a package of entries to the following rides: Antelope Island 50/50, Black Hills 50/50, Ft. Howes 25/50/100, Shamrock 50/50/50 and the Colfax Coalrush 55/55. WOW!! THAT'S ABOUT AN ENTIRE SEASON OF RIDING!!! Tickets are $10 each or three for $25. The drawing will be held on July 26th at the Colfax Coalrush ride in Raton, NM.

  • Nomination Packets and Info Dear Riders,

The nomination packets are in the mail so if you haven't received yours yet you should shortly. If you are really getting worried you can contact Torri Nahorniak tnahorniak@equestrian.org (859) 225-2027, for a packet (make sure you tell her you need one from the Mountain Zone). Filling out this mound of paperwork is probably the most challenging part of the FEI process and is something that all you nominees must go through. No doubt this will enhance the team bonding experience as you will regale your fellow team mates with tales of sneaking in to use the copier at work in order to rip through a ream of paper and bragging about who has the worst paper cuts. In order to help all of you who haven't had to perform this task before, here are some suggestions, hints, clarifications and reminders.

The most important thing to do is this: MAKE A COPY OF ALL OF YOUR NOMINATION PAPER WORK IN CASE IT GETS LOST IN THE MAIL OR WHATEVER. It takes a fair bit of time to fill all of this out so save your self some grief. You might even want to make an extra copy before you start filling in the blanks just in case.

    YOU

  • * Join AERC/AERC International
  • * Juniors-you will need to get your AERC un-sponsored/adult status by then.
  • * Join USA-E. You can join on-line or download a membership application from their website www.equestrian.org . To join on-line, go to Memberships > Applications Online. To download an application form, go to Downloads & Publications, from Select Download Area pick Memberships. A Senior Membership is $40, plus there is a Discipline fee of $10 for endurance-don't forget this. Junior memberships are $35-no discipline fee is required
  • * Join USET. Their website is www.uset.com. Go to Support USET for a membership application. The minimum membership is $35. Join online or print their membership form.

    YOUR HORSE/HORSES

  • * Get a Recording Certificate from USA-E. You can use the form that was included in your packet or you can do this online under Memberships > 2003 Horse Recording Application. Your choices are for one year ($75) or lifetime ($200). If you want to do FEI beyond this year or if you think you'll ever need to get an FEI passport, then you will have to belly up to the bar with your 200 Samolians.

All of the minimum mileage requirements must be completed by March 31, 2003. Your paperwork must be POSTMARKED and IN THE MAIL by March 31st.

    FLU VACCINATIONS

This subject was the cause of some consternation last time around. If your horse hasn't been in the FEI loop, you will need to start all over with the flu shots. Here is a Reader's Digest example of how to meet this requirement:

  • 1. Pick the first day of a month (say March 1st) to have your vet come out and give the first flu shot, making sure this info is recorded on that vaccination record sheet. Your vet will need to bring a rubber stamp of their name to pound on the paper so don't forget to remind him/her.
  • 2. Sometime between March 22-May 31, have the vet back out to give the second flu shot and record the data. That's it. These first two vaccinations have to be shots, not nasal vaccines.
  • 3. Next year if you want to keep current with FEI, have your vet out to give either a flu shot or nasal vaccine by the date that the second shot was given.
  • 4. Bring a copy of this vaccination record to the ride.

There are no other vaccination requirements/restrictions this year (if you are concerned about West Nile Virus shots).

    HORSE ID FORM

While your vet is out to give the shots, you can have the horse ID form which was included in you packet filled out, signed & stamped by your vet. You can also use your Coggin's papers as long as your horse's markings are drawn/notated as accurately as possible. Bring these to the ride.

I have attached some information compiled by Torri Nahorniak at USAE order to answer some of the most common questions that she has received. Please take a look at it and let us know if you have any other questions on regarding your paperwork. In the meantime, take a few minutes to check out all of the FEI information on line. There is quite a bit of info on endurance.net>International as well as the USAE website under Membership>Discipline>Endurance.

    Happy Writing!

Mountain Team Raffle Having to raise money to pay for all of the extra trappings required by FEI is on every zone's list of things to do. One of our fund raisers for the Mountain Zone is a raffle which has been put together by Susie Schomburg.
For raffle tickets or more info contact Susie Schomburg at (307) 322-3503.

    Our three grandprizes are :

    • * "Up In Flames"-a Sweepstakes Nominated three year old purebred Arabian gelding by Bask Flame (you can see Bask Flame at www.arabhorse.com/stallion/baskflame/ ). He is currently in residence at Susie's if you have any questions about him. She's in danger of falling in love with him so please help rescue her!
    • * An original oil painting by Susan Norris-Romero. A talented artist, Susan has captured the last two AERC Hall of Fame horses in oil. You can see her work on the cover of the 2000 AERC Yearbook.
    • * A package of entries to five rides for the 2004 season: Antelope Island 50/50, Black Hills 50/50, Ft. Howes 25/50/100, Shamrock 50/50/50, and the Colfax Coalrush 55/55. You can just about ride for free for an entire year on this prize. These ride entries are all transferable if you do not happen to live close to any of them.
The tickets are $10/ea or 3/$25. The drawing will be held on July 26th at the Colfax Coalrush ride. There is something for everyone in this raffle!

Bob Steller of Steller Equestrians has also donated two breedings to his endurance stallion Hasty Flyer+/, to be conducted by silent auction. For information on getting your bid in, contact Susie Schomburg at (307) 322-3503. For more info on this stallion, visit the MRER Webpage.

    FEI Tips from Jan
Let's Go With Dick, Jane, and Sally to an FEI ride!

Hey Kids! What do we need to know if we're going to an FEI ride?

    1. What do I need for my horse?

  • A. You will need your horse's paperwork.
    • Passport or horse registration with USA-Equestrian.
    • Proof of Vaccination as required by FEI for Equine Influenza.
    • Current Coggins and Health Papers. Make sure that your Coggins papers are specific to your horse. Don't allow your vet to put down "bay gelding" or "flea bitten grey mare". The vets that are doing the inspections will want more information. If you can get your vet to list the whirls on your horse's coat, specific markings, brands, and anything else that is particular to your horse you will be miles ahead.
  • B. Tack Wise, what do I need to know?
    • Leave your spurs, whips, and draw reins at home. They don't allow them at FEI events.
    • Remember to make sure that you and your tack make the weight required at the FEI event before you leave. It's best to wear what you're going to wear on ride day when you weigh yourself. The weight requirement should be available in the Definite Schedule from Ride Management. To be safe, make sure that you and your saddle make the weight requirement. Usually they don't allow you to weigh with your bridle, although this is up to the organizing committee and the FEI officials. Also remember to empty your water bottles before you go weigh.
    2. What do I need for me?
  • A. Clothing Wise, What do I need to know?
    • Shirt with a collar is usually required. This just means a polo shirt, so you won't need to purchase anything finer. You don't even need a tie, though it would look "Smashing".
    • Leave the bright and flashy tights at home. Generally speaking most Officials aren't going to make a BIG deal about it, but just to be on the safe side, wear "Plain Jane" tights.
    • If you ride in boots with heels you have no problem. If, however, you ride with tennis shoes you will need to have cages on your stirrups.
    • Don't forget your helmet!
    3. Inspections, Examinations, Pomp and Circumstance.
  • A. Check with ride management (Organizing Committee) to see when and where you will need to park prior to unloading. FEI requires that you park separate from the "other" riders. This is to insure that only horses with the correct vaccinations are "stabled" together. Often at the US FEI rides they allow horses who are not entered in the FEI division to camp with the FEI horses if they have the same vaccinations (bring that paperwork on the other horse(s)! OR expect that you'll have to park elsewhere OR have two different "stables" for your horses. Yes, this is a pain the @#$, but it is something that you'll just have to live with. Believe me they have all heard it before, so complaining about it isn't going to help.
  • B. Horse Inspections: This is to make sure that you are riding the horse that you say you are riding. They also use this to make sure that your vaccination paperwork is correct.
  • C. Examinations: This is like a vet check. Plan and simple.
  • D. Sometimes they combine the two to save time, although sometimes the inspection will be held as soon as you enter the ride site.
  • E. After unloading and setting up your camp, go see the ride management to check out when you're set up for "inspections, examinations, and weigh-ins".
  • F. Rider Weigh-In and Inspection: Yes, you'll have to step up on the scales with your tack. Again, check with ride management to see when you have to show yourself. Also wear what you're planning on wearing ride day-that way you'll have your exact weight. 4. What should I expect that might be different from a "Normal Ride"?
  • A. Paperwork. Just a couple extra forms maybe, bring your membership cards for USA-Equestrian, AERC, and AERC International (Not sure about this one, my current card doesn't list that I'm an AERC-I member, so?).
  • B. Parking. Yes, they will make you park in a separate area. Some rides make a big deal about this, while others do not. If you are bringing another horse for a different distance, buddy, or whatever, try to have that horse have the same type of vaccinations and vaccination records that your FEI horse has and bring them with. If you don't, please don't panic, you will probably just have to park in another row. Check with Ride Management to see how they are handling it.
  • C. Vetting Area. Generally speaking you probably won't see a lot of difference here. You might see a more "Defined" area for crewing, pulsing down, and vetting lanes. It may even seem more "Organized" looking. Again, this is nothing to panic about, just pay attention and move through the lines just the same as you would at a "normal" ride.
  • D. Petting or massaging your horse. If you can, try not to get to "touchy-feely" with your horse in the Pulsing Area and the Vetting Area. It used to be that they didn't allow you to touch your horse while pulse was being taken and while the horse was being vetted through. All you could do is just hold your lead rope. It's best not to push it. Again, you will find this differs from FEI ride to FEI ride. Currently, I'm not sure how the stance is on this, but we will know FOR SURE well in advance of Pan Am.
  • E. Meetings. More than likely they will just combine the FEI with the "normal" ride meeting. Check with Management just to be safe.
    Finally:
    5. Ride Your Ride. Don't try to make this more than what it is. Ask questions if you aren't sure of something. Riders sometimes feel really intimidated by "Officials". The Officials and the ride management are there to help.
