Eduardo Sanchez Hidalgo, the pairs category rider from Sanlucar de Barrameda won the 70 kilometer fourth stage of Raid Kaliber Andalucia on his mount Hermes, accompanied by first place team rider Jose Gundin Basque was on Sopenilla.

The third stage of Andalusia Kaliber V Raid was held Monday April 12 between El Rocio and Sanlucar de Barrameda. The veterinary control point was at Matalascanas. Participants left at dawn, on the trail in the dim light by 7:30. With almost 40 kilometers to be ridden along the beach, they had to pass the check point and arrive to the finish before the rise of the tide, so an early start was necessary, though not entirely welcomed by the tiring riders and support crews!

From the first few miles Eduardo Sanchez and Jose Gundin, who had decided to make stage together, took an early lead, galloping up to the first point of water at the 9 mile race. Once they reached the dunes of Donana, the pace slowed as the hills and deep sand demanded more of the horses. At the veterinary checkpoint the pair arrived 4 minutes ahead of the Germans Annette Nothhaft and Heike Blumel and 2 minutos before Spaniards Eduardo Vazquez Santiago Perez Dorao.

At the veterinary control and Gundin and Sanchez gained 6 minutes on Vazquez and Perez, and 14 minutes over the German. All horses passed the veterinary control and the Spanish pair increase their lead with every kilometer, reaching the final goal almost 30 minutes ahead of the rest. They took top honors with Eduardo Sanchez Hidalgo and HERMES winning the pairs and Jose Gundin and Sopenilla winning teams.

The second place team was won by a sprint among several French riders, with Veronique Gaillard on Loukoum beating Daniel Maldera and Otello de Rivoiron by two minutes. The second place for pairs went to Eduardo Vazquez riding Shagya-Zozo and the third for Santiago Perez Dorao on Marlboro YAC.

In the three day standings for pairs Eduardo Sanchez and Hermes are now the overall leaders, ahead of Eduardo Vazquez and Shagya Zozo. In the team division Jose Gundin and Imanol Basque Vault have a slight lead over the French.

Tuesday morning will host the fourth stage of the Raid Kaliber Andalusia between Villamartin and Ronda, over a total of 60 kilometers and with a veterinary break at Zahara. Participants will drive to Cortijo de la Guster for a 10am start.

12/04/10. Eduardo Sanchez Hidalgo, el jinete de Sanlucar de Barrameda, gano la etapa con llegada a la Playa de Malandar con su montura HERMES, despues de una gran escapada de casi 70 kilometros, acompanado por el vasco Jose Gundin que fue el primero en equipos con SOPENILLA.

La tercera etapa del V Raid Kaliber Andalucia se disputo hoy lunes 12 de abril entre El Rocio y Sanlucar de Barrameda, sobre un total de 70 kilometros y con el control veterinario intermedio en Matalascanas. Los participantes salieron al amanecer, un poco antes de las siete y media de la manana, para evitar en lo posible la subida de la marea en la segunda fase, entre Matalascanas y Malandar.

Desde los primeros kilometros Eduardo Sanchez y Jose Gundin, que habian decidido hacer la etapa juntos, aprovecharon el terreno duro para galopar un poco. A la vista de que nadie les seguia, galoparon hasta el primer punto de agua, en el kilometro 9 de carrera. Posteriormente, ya en las dunas del entorno de Donana, bajaron el ritmo adaptandose al suelo mas exigente. En el kilometro 23 el duo de cabeza pasaba con 4 minutos de ventaja sobre las alemanas Annette Nothhaft y Heike Blümel y 2 minutos mas sobre los espanoles Eduardo Vazquez y Santiago Perez Dorao.

En el control veterinario de Matalascanas Sanchez y Gundin llegaron con 6 minutos sobre Vazquez y Perez, y 14 minutos sobre las alemanas. En el control veterinario todos los caballos pasaron satisfactoriamente, y entre Matalascanas y Malandar los dos primeros aumentaron con cada kilometro su ventaja, llegando a la meta final con sus primeros perseguidores a casi media hora, con lo que ademas de ganar las etapas tambien se hicieron con el primer puesto de sus respectivas clasificaciones, Eduardo Sanchez Hidalgo y HERMES en binomios y Jose Gundin y SOPENILLA por equipos.

Para el segundo puesto por equipos hubo sprint entre varios franceses, imponiendose Veronique Gaillard con LOUKOUM delante de Daniel Maldera con OTELLO-DE-RIVOIRON. Por binomios el segundo puesto fue para Eduardo Vazquez con SHAGYA-ZOZO y el tercero para Santiago Perez Dorao con MARLBORO-YAC.

En la nueva clasificacion general de binomios Eduardo Sanchez Hidalgo y HERMES son ahora lideres de carrera delante de Eduardo Vazquez y SHAGYA-ZOZO, mientras que por equipos los vascos Jose Gundin e Imanol Boveda lideran la general delante de varios equipos franceses.

Manana martes se disputara la cuarta etapa del Raid Kaliber Andalucia entre Villamartin y Ronda, sobre un total de 60 kilometros y con un control veterinario y un descanso intermedio en Zahara. Los participantes saldran del Cortijo de la Ventolera a partir de la 10 de la manana y se les espera en Ronda a partir de las 15 horas.
