Drinkers of the Wind Arabians is an Arabian horse ranch located in the Rocky Mountains in Bellevue, Idaho near the Sun Valley Ski Resort. Robert Bouttier has owned and operated the ranch since the 1970's and named it Drinkers of the Wind Arabians after the book written by Carl Raswan.
Robert raises mostly Polish Arabian horses with the Forta and Sabellina bloodlines which produced the great horses such as Sambor, Sabson, Samtyr, Monarch AH, Falat, NF Proof, etc. French Arabian bloodlines have also been included in the DWA breeding program by stallions such as Haffir el Rimal, Chndaka, Ala Croixnoire, Falina des Fabries, and Darwinn.
Robert breeds his daughters of Sabson (by Czort out of Sabellina and full brother to Sambor) and daughters of Sam Tiki, Haffir el Rimal, and Monarch AH, to name a few, to stallions which include Monarch AH, Moment of Valor (by Wiking), Samsheik, DWA Papillon (Monarch AH X DWA Croix Blanche by Ala Croixnoire), DWA Ziffalat (by Falat), and NF Proof. Many of the DWA horses have excelled at the track as well as in endurance, and others have made excellent pleasure and trail horses.
On the DWA website, www.dwarabians.com, you can see the endurance records of some of the DWA horses who have excelled in the sport such as DWA Sabku, DWA Powerball, DWA Millennium, DWA Express (owned and campaigned by Christoph Schork), and DWA Sabella, DWA Pearl, DWA Khyber (owned and campaigned by Tennessee Lane), and DWA Saruq (owned and campaigned by Connie Holloway).
You can read more about Robert Bouttier and his breeding program by going to his website page called "DWA Breeding Program" and clicking on the link to Merri Melde's article entitled, "Drinkers of the Wind Arabians, Quest for the Perfect Horse."
The Drinkers of the Wind Arabians ranch is located at an elevation of 5,000 feet with temperatures ranging from -30 F in the winter to 100 F in the summer. The DWA horses have the opportunity to run in large pastures from the time they are born, which gives their bodies the exercise needed to develop into strong and athletic horses. They are handled with kindness and consistency since birth and receive excellent care which helps to ensure that they develop into healthy adults, both physically and mentally. When they are four years old, they are sent to professional trainers who continue their education with kindness and consistency.
On the DWA website, if you go to the “DWA Training Photos” page, you can see examples of the quality of training the DWA horses receive. Drinkers of the Wind Arabians has numerous horses with superior racing bloodlines for sale, from weanlings to six year olds.
Anyone interested in purchasing DWA horses can look on the DWA website and/or call us at (208)788-3080 or (208)720-8792.
Bred by DWA Arabians, in Bellevue, Idaho, and owned by Connie Holloway, DWA Barack earned year-end Endurance honors in both SWITnDR and PNER Endurance clubs. Holloway and Barack completed all 11 of their starts in the 2021 Endurance season.
In the local riding group SWITnDR (Southwest Idaho Trail and Distance Riders) they placed 1st in point standings, 4th in horse and rider standings with 250 Endurance miles, and 6th in Limited Distance miles with 155 miles.
And by completing all 11 of their rides of the 2021 season, Barack earned a “Sandy Bar” award in PNER (Pacific Northwest Endurance Rides), for horses who complete at least 10 rides in a row in one season. They also placed 6th in club mileage.
He’s come a long way,” says Holloway. “I took him on as my ‘Coronavirus project’ at the beginning of 2020, as a 12-year-old. I put a lot of time and effort into developing his mind and into getting him to balance up on the trails.” Barack completed 10 of his 12 rides in the 2020 season, and this season he started moving up to 50-milers, and finished all of his rides, 6 Limited Distance and 5 Endurance for a total of 405 miles.
By Moment of Valor, DWA Barack is out of DWA French Kiss (Haffir El Rimal X DWA WH Zinfandel, by Sabson), one of breeder Robert “Archie” Bouttier’s favorite mares that he bred, raced, and competed on in Endurance.
Bouttier passed away in early 2021, but his equine legacy continues.

DWA Arabians in Bellevue, Idaho, is proud of the accomplishments of DWA Malik and Jeff Stuart of Ogden, Utah this summer.
Finishing in 12th place in a ride time of 5:10, the pair won the National 50-mile Heavyweight title at the AERC National Championships at Fort Howes, Montana on June 11th.
The 16-year-old gelding’s next start was, rather unexpectedly, the July 24th Tevis Cup, when Stuart’s other mount was injured. The pair finished Tevis in 62nd place (133 started, 63 finished), in a ride time of 21:59 - with one minute to spare! It was Stuart’s second 100-mile completion and Malik’s first. It was “a brutally hard ride,” Stuart said. “I learned a whole new side of this horse that I could not be more proud of.”
Bred by Robert “Archie” Bouttier, DWA Malik is by Monarch AH X DWA Croix Blanche, by Ala Croixnoire.
