My guys are both fairly big (15'3 and 15'1) the rougher being the bigger guy. The smooth gaited guy is the easiest to ride horse I've ever had. I think if you're comparing an Arab to a gaited horse, of course, the Arab is not as smooth. However, (flame away) I believe that if you want to "go the distance" and do it competitively you should be riding an Arab and they do come in smoother gaited varieties. Some of the Arab crosses are obviously very good. And you can get the occasional mule who can compete for a couple of years and do well. However, over the long haul I believe the Arabian has proven himself to be superior in distance riding. (This from a "Paint horse" person).
