We stop every couple of hours or so (depending)
to offer beet pulp/water mixture. The horses
travel with ad lib haylage (semi-wilted grass -
higher moisture content than grass hay) in
haynets in front of them in the trailer. We don't
tend to let them out as we usually have to stop
at service areas on the motorway where a loose
horse would last about 2 seconds before being
flattened by the traffic! Have trailered upto 8
hours this way without a problem. For an 8 hour
journey the horse would usually have a couple of
nights in camp to get over it before the ride. If
it is very hot, the beet/water mix might have
some electrolyte (or electrolyte/probiotic mix)
in it too. Usually it isn't so hot over here
though and the horses that travel this far are
seasoned travellers.
