Feeding while travelling

I've recently started offering soaked beet pulp during our stops along the
road. At least I get some moisture in them. I do try to wet the hay that is
offered.
Would like to hear from more folks about this challenge.  How long at a
time without a "break" -- and how long is the break?  Do you take the horse
off during a trip?
