When I got my first horse her mane was in terrible shape with many different
lengths.  I roached it in August.  The mare was miserable.  There was no way
she could get the flies and bugs off her neck. 

I promised her I would NEVER do that again.  For 20 years I have kept that
promise.  If a longer mane gets in the way while riding or it seems to be hot
on the neck,  you can always braid it up or just make lots of little "pony
tails" out of it.  Nature gave a horse a mane for a reason.
