What happens is that the foals are healthy until they are put through
the stress of weaning. By then they have received both series of shots;
however, the hot days combined with the cold nights of fall have caused
several of them to get foal pneumonia. Because of that, I myself prefer
to foal out earlier; the weaning time appears to be more critical to me
weather wise than the foaling time. Anyone else have this experience? >>
I've had clients who've had that experience, but those who do all wean into
stalls, and the change to the dust from the shavings and the ammonia is more
of a factor, IMO. We try to have most of our foals in May or June, and don't
mind them later (5 Junes and an August due next year)--have never had a sick
baby at weaning. But then we usually leave the babies in the familiar
environment and take the mommies away, and many times they don't even seem to
miss their moms.
