Rest time??
A long time ago, more than ten years I think, there was a report of a test
done with Standardbreds taken right from successful racing efforts to total
stall rest. At the start of the test each was tested on a treadmill for
speed and fittness. At regular intervals some were retested. The results
seemed to show that there was continued improvement in performance up to
about 14 days of stall rest, then leveled off (I don't remember for how
long) before they began to drop off in the ability to perform.
Seem to remember this was done in Sweden, anybody else ever see this?
If this was a valid test it may indicate that a couple weeks off between
rides for a fit seasoned horse could be useful. I would pasture rest
rather than stall, of course.
My horses never seem to go backwards when I do this.
Anybody else with some thoughts?? Tom, did you ever hear about anything
like this?
