I once lost two horses to car accidents...it was a snowy, blustery day just
at dusk when they spooked and went through the fence.  Whatever spooked
them caused all caution to be thrown to the wind.  They started on a run
and though we managed to corner two and catch them, the others ran until
one was hit, got up and continued to run (she eventually bled to death) and
the other, after also being hit, I had to have the sherrif's deputy destroy
(broken leg and vet couldn't get there).  The roads were horrible.  No one
tried to help us...neighbors (we were still "new" neighbors) would point
and say "They went thataway" but no one tried to stop them or help us catch
them until it was too late anyway.  I really feel for you.... it's a
horrible way to lose a horse.  As far as liability goes, one insurance
company tried to sue us, we sent them an appraisal of the horse's value and
never heard from them again.  Just last week, we had 3 mornings in a row
that one of our 2 year old fillies decided it was fun to go through the
fence and go "visiting", taking the rest of her group (3 horses) with
her... I think she was just bored.  We decided to start putting them one by
one in another pasture to see if it would solve the problem.  She happened
to be the first one (we suspected her to begin with!) and it hasn't
happened since.  But I still get that awful feeling in my gut whenever a
horse gets loose.  Take care and remember...this, too, shall pass.  (Thanks
