There ARE different kinds of winning, though. For instance, you can "win"
the year-end mileage championship without ever winning a single ride.
Likewise, you can "win" a seasonal points championship by just finishing a
lot of rides near the front. So you have to define what it is that you want
to win.
As we get into FEI competition, the win at the Big Event does become more
important. Again, there are different sorts of competition even within that
competition--with the exception of our own Wendy Merendini, I don't think ANY
members of any of the team medal winners were even in the Top Ten. (Could be
wrong there, but you get the drift.)
I agree with the AERC motto, but I'd like to reiterate the "altered" version
that we kept chanting as our mantra in Dubai (and that someone else has
already shared)--"To Finish First, First You Have To Finish!" With the pull
percentage being far higher at these high profile rides, I think many riders
occasionally forget that.
