cramp and tying-up...and how would you handle the situation? >>

The severity of cramping dictates how closely you have to adhere to the
"don't move" dictum. Certainly you should not be continuing at competition
speeds, but often taking a few steps at a time and resting, then a few more
and resting, etc. can get you to a trailering point safely. The urgency of
the problem depends a lot on the particular ride--what terrain, the
communications set-up, etc.--as well as whether or not you are riding with
buddies. As a rider, I've communicated the plight of a fellow rider to the
nearest communication point or vet check on more than one occasion--be sure
to include your plan for moving from your present position, if you have one.
As a ride vet, I've had to literally go to the horse a couple of times; other
times the horse has been able to get to a point where it could be met by a
rig (vet may go with the rig, too) and hauled to camp.
