Is horse metabolism so different here from rodent/human metabolism?
A person at rest, will often use entirely fats for energy. At a
walk, in a trained individual, I still see them using almost entirely
fats. At a slow jog mostly fats [again this in a trained individual,
an unfit person will be at near max and totally reliant upon carbs at
a slow jog.] What are the RER values in horses during treadmill
exercise at sumbaximal workloads? This info must be out there
somewhere, any one know? Would be a fairly easy study if the lab has
a treadmill and metabolic cart. Now, Tom, carb
supplementation should still prolong their ability to exercise, don't
get upset here.

Ok, do an experiment for me when you have a chance. Those highly trained, fat
burning athletes--feed them a candy bar about an hour before a stress test
and tell me if the fuel usage picture changes dramatically or not. That would
be interesting. You should see higher post-ex lactates concurrent with better
performance, indicating a shift towards carb metabolism and an ergogenic
effect thereby.
