The first multiday

Out of curiosity, what was the first multiday ride?  I've read and been 
told that the first one was the Capitol to Capitol ride that went from 
Washoe (Carson City) to Sacramento in 4 days, and that was started in 1982, 
and then the XP was started the following year (1983).

Then I read this on the multiday web page on endurance.net:

In 1983 the XP became the first
                     multi-day ride to be sanctioned by the AERC.

So which ride was the first official multiday ride?  Was the Capitol to 
Capitol not sanctioned?

Isn't it amazing how popular they have become.......wow.
