I was intrigued and pleased to see the above post. We all have some group
that we would prefer did not share our world ... for some horsemen it is the
mountiain bicyclists, for hikers it's the horsemen, for others, it's ......
and on and on. It's a big world with lots of people and we all have to learn
to get along, somehow. As was expressed at a local city council meeting some
time ago, over the issue of allowing horsemen access from one park, through
another to get to a third one .... "we all bought this land with our tax
money and no one entity has the right to exclude any other". In the long
run, there was a compromise and the horsemen and bicyclists achieved
right-of-way and share a newly constructed trail. As much as we may not like
........ (fill in the blank with your own favorite group to dislike), we need
to learn to get along. In the aforementioned case, the bicyclists and
horsemen allied themselves against the preservationist groups who wanted the
land all to themselves so they could go somewhere to be alone with their
thoughts. In today's society, there is little area where one can go and be
"alone" unless you are willing and able to walk away from the crowds. You
can't have "an isolated area easily accessible by automobile." (A forester
told me that one, decades ago. He did a graduate research on what the average
person wanted in the way of a recreational area, and that was the answer).
I'll come down from my soapbox now ......
