"I found a good way to help teach a horse NOT to pull back. I use a belly rope...long enough to go around belly, up thru halter and then tie. When the horse pulls back, the pressure is on his body, not head and neck. You will be surprise how quickly they step forward and away from the pressure." I used to have a mare that had been taught to set back by letting her get loose one time (or twenty!) too often by her previous owner. She would stand fine with a belly rope, but no amount of tying with a belly rope would convince her to tie without one. She would set back as soon as she was tied with no stimulus other than being tied, but put the belly rope on again and she would stand like a rock. We tied her to a barn suport (4X6) and would have let her just have it out except that she might have hurt herself if we did. She was NOT afraid, just spoiled. I really wish I knew then what I know now. I could have retrained her. Now, with my yearling, when I first got him, I started with the basic concept of giving to pressure. Once he knew that I "tied" him with a rope around a post. He set back for about ten seconds and moved forward. He has never tried it again. Smart boy! Karen Hicks, Trustee M.A.R.E., Inc.
