The strike was probably near by.
Do you have ledge near by? Lightning likes to strike
ledge in this area, and it sometimes can take a bizarre path.
Several years ago, one of my friends lost two horses
when somehow, the charge arc'd from one horses halter's
hardware to the other's. The horses had burn marks on their
faces where the hardware was.
Another reason not to use halters on a pastured horse.
And last summer, my neighbor had 5 cows killed (one storm).
My large horse pasture adjoins his cow pasture, and because
we had fair warning on this storm, I had moved my horses to the
barn paddocks. Lucky.
And, supposedly, we aren't even in a "high" lightning strike area
(northern Vt).
