I am leery of using penicillin on horses that have been exposed. It can
delay the formation of abcesses, so that they simply occur after you take the
horse off the drug. I'm not sure as to what extent it is implicated in the
formation of internal abcesses, but just keeping it at bay does give it more
opportunity to become widespread.
