<< Viv--Very well put. It's all a matter of common sense, taking personal
responsibility, and courtesy. Ride managers should be aware of necessity of
altering start times as necessary depending upon the course, but it all
comes down to "you pays your money and you takes your chances" whatever
distance you're riding. We have to quit expecting to be guarded and
protected from everything that might possibly go wrong out there. >>
Betty makes a very valid point in her last sentence--and I would add that it
behooves all of us who ride to come to rides with horses that are
sufficiently trained (not just conditioned) to be under control. If a horse
is potentially out of control, we need to rethink why we are there.
That said, there will always be those occasional people who, either through
rudeness or ignorance, will NOT use good courtesy and common sense. It is
the responsibility of the ride manager to try to eliminate as much potential
conflict as possible by giving careful thought to both trail construction and
starting time. Ignorance that comes across as rudeness can sometimes be
warded off by careful instruction for newcomers at ride meetings.
But beyond that, we all must be prepared for the occasional problem--that's
just part of real life and endurance riding...
