Little in substance, or little in height?  And when the horse is beating the 
pants off of you (as I've seen happen with many a bigger rider on a 
short-but-substantial horse), who has the last laugh?
I've checked a heckuva lot of backs on short-but-stout well-built horses 
ridden by heavy riders, and they've been just fine.  I've also felt a lot of 
backs on improperly conformed large horses ridden by featherweights who were 
excellent riders, and they were in great pain.  Once again, it is the 
conformation, not the size that counts with the horse.  I also have to add 
here that I've seen some heavy riders that ride VERY well and some smaller 
ones that ride like a sack of potatoes, and that has more impact, IMO, than 
the actual pounds...
